Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Leuko Pak / Whole Blood / Plasma

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). In the US, MS affects between 250,000 to 350,000 patients, and women are twice as likely to develop MS than men. The exact causes of MS remains unclear but it is speculated that genetic predisposition and envioremental factors lead to a self-sustaining immune attacks on the myelinated axons in the CNS. The course of the disease is highly unpredictable, but the damage to the myelin and axons often interrupts the communication among brain cells and between the brain and the body. As a result, MS can cause numbness, severe fatigue, blurred vision and impaired speech and impaired muscular coordination. 

Leuko paks are obtained when they become available to our network of clinicians, by a donation process where blood is withdrawn from the donor via leukapheresis utilizing an apheresis machine such as the COBE Spectra Optia®. The donor’s white blood cells are selectively collected and the remaining blood is reinfused to the body.  We can also collect whole blood and plasma samples from the patients. Some disease types may have a long backorder depending on the frequency of the disease occurrence in the general population.
