Psoriasis Leuko Pak / Whole Blood / Plasma

Psoriasis is a immune-mediated genetic disease manifesting in the skin or joints or both. Psoriasis is mediated by cells of both innate and adaptive immune systems, and is characterized by abnormal keratinocyte proliferation and immune cell infiltration in the dermis and epidermis. Patients affected by psoriasis have a rapid build-up of cells on the skin surface forming thick scales, causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin.  Patients are often affected by itchy dry red patches that can be painful as well. It typically affects the outside of the elbows, knees or scalp, though it can appear on any location. Psoriasis is associated with other serious health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and depression. Psoriasis has a strong, albeit polygenic, genetic basis. Multiple loci have been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease, including genes of major histocompatibility complex, nuclear factor-κB, interferon signalling and the IL-23–IL-23 receptor axis among others.

Leuko paks are obtained when they become available to our network of clinicians, by a donation process where blood is withdrawn from the donor via leukapheresis utilizing an apheresis machine such as the COBE Spectra Optia®. The donor’s white blood cells are selectively collected and the remaining blood is reinfused to the body.  We can also collect whole blood and plasma samples from the patients. Some disease types may have a long backorder depending on the frequency of the disease occurrence in the general population.
